In this exercise Charles wants you to work on defining the shape by feeling objects as they draw away from you...working on values in an indirect way. I loved this exercise as it gave me a better feel for values as they recede away from the light source.  He uses the lightest light as the first wash which I hadn't been used to and like the idea. I would obviously come back with the lightest paint and lay on heavy, but a great study on feeling the object and values.Read more …

Chapter 1.1

In this exercise Charles has you work on massing in the shapes making sure not to draw the shape.  Working from the center of an object out. This simple exercise is instrumental in oil painting as you tend to want to draw in the outline of the shape rather than just look at the shapes and mass them in.  I love the idea of pushing the paint inward to outer edges - that is what I took from this exercise.
